SUMMARY:How do Robots Care? Innovative Strategies and Interfaces for Physically Assistive Robots in Healthcare
DESCRIPTION:Meeting Room: 313 \nRecent advancements in robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) have enabled assistive robots to realize many activities alongside and with humans in shared environments. This physical proximity has introduced novel\, complex tasks for the robotics community to address\, which can be clustered into three main areas: \n\nPersonal care robots that facilitate humans in physical activities of daily living\,\nService robots that can perform manipulation tasks for and with humans\, and\nPhysical support robots that provide partial body weight support and assist and guide the humans during stance\, walking\, and other activities.\n\nHowever\, despite their potential to transform healthcare and beneficial societal impact\, such technologies still need to face several unresolved challenges to become part of our everyday lives. This workshop will explore the following emerging user-centric tools that are essential for overcoming such challenges: \n\nHuman Modeling and Assessment\, definition of models for online and non-invasive monitoring of the human physical and cognitive state and impairments;\nAssistive Hardware\, design of versatile and reconfigurable interfaces and devices that exploit (do not avoid) physical contact for seamless interaction;\nPersonalized learning and interaction\, developing techniques for learning and adapting robot behavior to individual intentions\, actions\, and preferences.\n\nThe focus will be on individualized models\, adaptive control and planning algorithms\, customizable designs and robotic interfaces\, and human-informed online learning and optimization techniques. A prominent theme throughout the workshop is interdisciplinary collaboration\, connecting the expertise of academics\, occupational experts\, and industry partners. We aim to provide a platform for fruitful discussion\, inspiring new perspectives and pathways for the community to successfully design and integrate individualized service\, care\, and physical assistive robots into society.

SUMMARY:Robot Safety Under Uncertainty from Intangible Specifications
DESCRIPTION:Meeting Room: 405 \nRobot and automation systems are expected to carry out increasingly sophisticated tasks in complex environments. This places stringent expectations on their autonomy stack to enforce operational constraints and safety guarantees. Safe control synthesis methods\, including model predictive control\, reachability analysis\, and control barrier functions\, commonly rely on explicit mathematical definitions of safety constraints with known system and environment models. Nevertheless\, many current applications incorporate perception uncertainty or semantic concepts in the task specifications\, and safety requirements may be specified implicitly\, abstractly\, or incompletely. \nThis workshop aims to investigate the concept and formulation of such “intangible” safety constraints. These constraints may not be specified explicitly as mathematical expressions but described through natural language\, semantic concepts\, observed by sensor data anomalies\, or inferred from demonstrations and prior experience. The techniques required to either identify such safety constraints or to propagate uncertainty through them are largely unexplored. \nOur workshop is interested in various facets of these techniques including: identification of safety constraints from demonstration\, compatibility of learned constraints and control design methodology\, interaction with humans or vision-language models for safety information\, and associated uncertainty quantification. The workshop invites experts in the field to discuss the formulation\, optimization\, and guarantees with intangible safety constraints.

SUMMARY:State of the Art in Lower-Limb Exoskeletons: Exploring Specificity vs. Generalizability Across Users and Activities
DESCRIPTION:Meeting Room: 403 \nEmerging robotic exoskeletons have the potential to enhance performance of non-disabled users\, restore normative leg biomechanics to impaired users\, or rehabilitate limb function after neurological disorders. However\, these devices have not been widely adopted due to their rigidity\, bulkiness\, acoustic noise\, cost\, battery life\, and/or non-intuitive control. While parallel industries are providing powerful\, lightweight\, and inexpensive motors with long-lasting batteries\, the exoskeleton research community is now largely focused on mechanical design\, interface\, and control challenges. \nOne body of work has shown that human walking effort can be reduced by customizing the assistance torque pattern to the user for a given activity through human-in-the-loop optimization. While some results have extended outside the lab\, it is unclear how to quickly generalize these methods across many users and activities. Another body of work has shown that task-agnostic control methods can handle a continuous range of activities without user-specific calibration\, for example\, predicting human joint torques across activities to reduce muscle effort or metabolic cost. \nHowever\, it is unclear how these versatile control methods can be personalized for optimal assistance\, especially for clinical patients. This workshop will explore specificity vs. generalizability across users and activities with the goal of finding benefits from both perspectives. This theme will be discussed as it relates to both control and device hardware optimization.

DESCRIPTION:Meeting Room: 402 \nThe Long-term Human Motion Prediction (LHMP) workshop\, taking place every ICRA in 2019–2024\, offers a unique interdisciplinary platform for researchers and practitioners from different communities to discuss the many facets of modeling human motion and behavior in various automated systems. To reflect the broad range of engineering challenges in human-aware systems\, we organize the talks of several high-profile invited speakers of diverse academic and industrial backgrounds. Furthermore\, in line with the ICRA 2025 ambition to broaden the scope and exchange knowledge\, we invite several interdisciplinary scholars of human motion with backgrounds in psychology\, sociology\, and biology. \nFollowing the recent trends\, this year\, in all talks\, we aim to raise the key question about the emerging General Intelligence models (e.g.\, LLMs\, Visual-Language models) and the perspectives they bring to the study of human motion\, human-like navigation\, and zero-shot interaction in complex environments. DESCRIPTION:Meeting Room: 411 \nIn the field\, we throw robots into the wild to achieve what seems a simple task\, that quickly ends up being arduous. As experts\, we continuously loop through designing\, developing\, deploying\, and analyzing our autonomous systems until it meets some level of success. From marine to forestry\, from mining to agriculture\, no matter the various applications\, field robotics is an ambitious area of work. The standards of success are rising\, given the advancements in robot designs and algorithmic frameworks\, but so too are new challenges arising\, limiting the advancement of field robotics. This workshop brings together experts and new enthusiasts from various subdomains of field robotics — such as marine\, aerial\, legged\, agriculture\, search-and rescue-robotics — to showcase not only the achievements in state-of-the-art field robotics\, but more importantly the respective open challenges. \nOpen questions — spanning from perception and state estimation to control\, planning\, and multi-robot coordination — for each subdomain that the workshop will explore include: What are established successes? What are the common and unique challenges? Why existing systems and algorithms are not working? What are possible solutions? Can solutions to these challenges generalize to other subdomains? What problems should we focus more on? The vision is to create shared perspectives from the various subdomains that will foster the identification of shared challenges and cross-domain solutions\, encourage networking\, exchange of experiences\, project inspirations\, and new collaborations\, towards building robust robots in the wild.

Acoustic sensors\, including microphones\, sonar\, and ultrasonic devices\, provide unique advantages in scenarios where vision-based perception may be limited by adversarial lighting conditions\, occlusions\, or environmental complexity. \nAcoustic sensors may endow robots with heightened situational awareness\, allow them to reason about interactions with the environment and enable sound-based feedback mechanisms that can react to voice commands or environment noise. However\, acoustic signals also present unique open challenges\, such as susceptibility to noise\, multi-path propagation effects\, the need for real-time processing in dynamic environments\, and extracting acoustic features or learning representations that are robust to context-dependent distortions. Addressing these challenges is crucial for unlocking the full potential of acoustic sensing in robotics.

DESCRIPTION:Meeting Room: 307 \nRobotic operation in space faces a consistent trade-off between building simple and resilient systems to withstand the extreme conditions\, and maintaining flexibility in the robot system to keep up with rapidly changing conditions. Soft robotics offers the promise of robotic performance in unstructured environments. \nThis workshop will bring together two fields to discuss challenges and potential solutions: space manipulation and soft robotics. Topics will range from and beyond. The workshop will include presentations and demonstrations of cutting-edge approaches\, as well as discussions to develop a unified framework. The intent of this workshop is to bring together researchers working at the intersection of space robotics\, manipulation and soft robotics. The challenge of operation in extreme and unpredictable environments is applicable to a broad range of robots\, across different sizes and functionalities. Soft robotics brings a new perspective for space challenges\, offering materials and mechanism solutions to complement conventional rigid robots. Soft robotics presents a compelling case for space exploration primarily due to its advantages over rigid robotics. \nThese robots are inherently more adaptable to unpredictable environments\, offer greater flexibility and resilience in handling various tasks such as repairs\, exploration and sample collection on celestial bodies. Their ability to conform to irregular surfaces and withstand impact makes them ideal for navigation rough terrain and confined spaces\, crucial for missions involving planetary exploration and asteroid mining. Moreover\, the lightweight and compact nature of soft robots reduces operational complexity and launch costs\, enabling more efficient and cost-effective space missions. By leveraging these capabilities\, soft robotics not only enhances the feasibility of complex space missions\, but also explands the scope of scientific exploration beyond what rigid robots can achieve. \nTo focus the discussion\, the workshop will be split into two thematic sections: manipulation and deployable structures. Both of these topics are highly relevant to the space robotics community\, and for both soft robotic technologies have been developed\, albeit not specifically for extreme environment applications. We have gathered experts in space robotics\, materials science\, mechanical engineering\, electrical engineering\, from industry\, academia and government organizations to discuss these topics\, to find common themes and solutions.

DESCRIPTION:Meeting Room: International Ballroom F (Omni Hotel) \nField robotics tackles the problem of developing\, deploying\, and evaluating autonomous mobile systems in unstructured and often dynamic environments. Typical commercial applications are in agriculture\, construction\, mining\, and forestry. The range of physical mediums is also very diversified: in the air\, on the ground\, underground\, on the water\, and underwater. These can be located on Earth\, or on other celestial bodies (e.g.\, planets\, moons\, or asteroids). \nAs such\, field robotics works under wildly diverse and radically different assumptions than other areas of robotics\, which tend to have well-defined working hypotheses. Therefore\, this creates its own set of challenges. This workshop will thus offer the opportunity to present work and discuss how these unique challenges can be solved. \nThis workshop will bring together experts\, researchers\, and practitioners to discuss the latest advancements in field robotics. Participants will gain valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities that arise in deploying robots in diverse field scenarios\, such as rugged terrains\, remote locations\, and hazardous environments. \nPractical case studies and real-world applications will be presented to showcase the successful\, and not-so-successful cases of field robotics. The workshop will encourage fruitful dialogues and collaborative discussions\, culminating by a panel at the end of the workshop. \nAttendees will leave with a comprehensive understanding of the state-of-the-art technologies\, the main actors\, and upcoming challenges. As major outcomes\, we aim to consolidate the community around field robotics and prepare an editorial article on the current status of robotics deployed in real environments.

SUMMARY:Empowering Humans with Miniaturized Sensing and Control: Shared Autonomy for Small-Scale Robots (SASSR)
DESCRIPTION:Meeting Room: 401 \nThe control of small-scale robots is becoming increasingly crucial across various domains\, from medical to micromanipulation applications. Despite recent significant advancements\, small-scale robot technologies often face limitations in sensing and actuation capabilities. These limitations pose challenges in executing tasks within complex environments. \nTo overcome these obstacles\, human-in-the-loop paradigms are essential\, as they integrate human expertise and decision-making with the precision of autonomous systems to enhance performance. For this purpose\, advanced perception techniques are vital for accurately detecting and interpreting environmental conditions\, while advanced control strategies are necessary for precise maneuvering and task execution. \nMoreover\, multisensory feedback strategies\, such as haptic and visual feedback\, are essential resources for improving the operator’s situational awareness and task effectiveness. However\, while the employment of such strategies is well-established in the macro-world\, their application at small scales remains an emerging field\, requiring deeper investigation. \nThis workshop will provide insights into the latest advancements and persistent challenges in shared autonomy for small-scale robotic systems. It will emphasize the critical role of human intervention and advanced feedback mechanisms in addressing current technological limitations. Additionally\, we will explore diverse application fields where small-scale robot control can be transformative\, such as the industrial and clinical domains.

DESCRIPTION:Meeting Room: 406 \nFuture robotic systems\, such as autonomous vehicles and caregiving robots\, promise to revolutionize our homes\, cities\, and roads. However\, a critical question remains—how can we trust that these technologies will be safe? Additionally\, how can society understand what type of assurances it should expect and demand from these systems? \nConsider a scenario where a cyclist suddenly falls in the path of an autonomous car. Must the car always avoid a collision? If it fails to do so\, is it merely an unfortunate edge case or an unacceptable safety failure that warrants a fleet-wide recall? These are the types of pressing ethical and technical dilemmas that must be addressed to ensure public confidence in autonomous systems. \nThis workshop aims to shed light on the assurances we can make—and demand—regarding the deployment of autonomous technologies. By informing the public conversation while these systems are still in the early stages of development\, we can help shape their future with safety and accountability in mind. \nFor robots\, autonomous vehicles\, and AI systems to become an integral part of our daily lives\, their safety must be as well understood as that of bridges\, power plants\, and elevators. To catalyze progress toward this goal\, the workshop will bring together technical and regulatory experts for a focused\, day-long discussion. The objective is to generate new insights on what it would take to establish rigorous foundations for public trust in autonomous systems.

SUMMARY:Human-Centered Robot Learning in the Era of Big Data and Large Models
DESCRIPTION:Meeting Room: 301 \nRecent advances in training large-scale models on massive internet-scale data show great promise for developing foundation models that enable robots to perform sophisticated tasks in human-centered environments\, such as transportation\, households\, healthcare\, and warehouses. These models introduce new paradigms for human-robot interaction\, allowing robots to follow complex human instructions\, collaborate effectively\, and understand and comply with social norms. \nHowever\, deploying embodied AI agents in the physical world presents additional challenges compared to deploying AI models that interact with humans virtually. First\, these models must be grounded in human representations and understandings of the physical world to ensure effective and trustworthy interactions. Second\, the risk of physical harm to humans imposes significantly higher requirements on AI safety. Third\, acquiring human-robot interaction data is significantly more difficult than accessing internet-scale data used for training large language models (LLMs). \nThis workshop aims to bring together interdisciplinary experts in fields such as robot learning\, human-robot interaction\, natural language processing\, cognitive science\, and trustworthy AI to discuss these grand challenges. We envision that this exchange of ideas within and across disciplines will help build new bridges toward the development and deployment of large-scale models for interactive embodied AI systems.
